New jobs expected from cycle trail

An 80km cycle trail through the Pureora Forest Park could result in hundreds of new jobs for the area.

Kohia Ltd, a consortium of Maori Trusts, is planning to establish a tourism enterprise on the Timber Trail, a Department of Conservation project in the central North Island due to be opened in November.

Kohia Ltd chairperson Kevin Were says the group will manage the trail and ensure the attraction runs smoothly.

Mr Were says it will result in a huge number of jobs for a region where the loss of logging has been keenly felt.

He says booking services, new accommodation, restaurants, and transportation to and from the track will all result in new jobs.

It is expected 10,000 - 15,000 people will use the trail every year.
