Waikato Regional Council Maori seats set

10:30 am on 24 August 2012

The introduction of two Maori seats around the Waikato Regional Council table is now set in stone.

The council voted in October last year to include two Maori seats alongside the 12 general seats.

The proposed constituency boundaries went out for public consultation in June, and now they have been finalised.

The northern Maori seat will be called Nga Hau e Wha (the four winds) and the other Nga Tai ki Uta to reflect its geographical location.

Maori in the region will have the chance to vote for the first Maori councillors at the 2013 local elections.

The council says 21% of the Waikato population is Maori.
