Ministry steps in as neighbouring units bicker

7:37 pm on 29 May 2012

Education Ministry officials have interceded in a continuing dispute between two adjacent Maori-language immersion units.

Te Kura Kaupapa o Nga Maungarongo alleges that the Te Puna Reo Maungarongo owes it $9000 in rental fees, but the puna - a pre-school group - rejects this claim.

Land used by the puna belongs to the ministry and is managed on its behalf by the kura's board of trustees.

Education Ministry northern regional manager, Bruce Adin, says the puna has a licence to occupy the building there, but the kura said three months ago that it would be serving a notice to quit.

Ministry staff are trying to mediate between the parties including running a number of hui, seeking help from independent Maori leaders, and arranging meetings with senior ministry leaders.
