Land at the centre of the Crafar Farms debate is being considered for a Treaty settlement with King Country iwi.

Two historical sites of significance to Ngati Rereahu and a Taranaki iwi currently on Crafar Farm properties, have been identified as requiring protection and reservation status when sold to a Chinese consortium.

The Government approved the sale of the 16 Crafar farms to Shanghai Pengxin last week.

The Overseas Investment Office has recommended the new owners be required to preserve the historical sites and provide reasonable access for iwi members.

Shanghai Pengxin has agreed to transfer the pa sites to the Crown and allow iwi access because it recognises the historical importance the whenua has to the iwi.
