Feedback deadline for Auckland hapu's settlement

10:15 am on 19 April 2012

The deadline has just passed for public submissions on legislation to settle the grievances of Auckland largest hapu.

The feedback has been sought by Parliament's Maori Affairs Select Committee on the Ngati Whatua Orakei Claims Settlement Bill.

As part of the compensation package, the hapu has been given the right to purchase a 3.2 hectare block of Defence Force property.

However, some residents of the Auckland suburb of Devonport have objected. They say they want the portion of Narrow Neck headland to be kept in public ownership.
