Iwi put energy into constitutional efforts

The chair of the Independent Constitutional Transformation Working Group says iwi are channelling their energy into creating a constitution - instead of being angry and frustrated with the Government.

The pan-tribal roopu is due to start holding a series of hui from the middle of April and will be visiting taangata whenua across the country.

Its task is to find out how a constitution might be based upon Te Tiriti o Waitangi, looking at how marae were governed before the arrival of Pakeha.

The information will be available to whanau and later will be put in a report for iwi leaders.

Group chair Margaret Mutu says some Maori are frustrated by government policies such as the sale of shares in four State-owned enterprises.

Professor Mutu says taangata whenua want to find positive ways for all New Zealanders to live by.
