The coach of the New Zealand women's football side Tony Readings has named an 18 strong Football Ferns squad for an international against the United States, he says will provide the ultimate Olympic benchmark.

In his first squad as head coach, Readings' has sprung few surprises for the match in Texas on Saturday week.

All the players were part of last year's World Cup squad and it's the most experienced Football Ferns squad selected with 750 caps between them.

Readings says the Americans are a benchmark for the women's game having won three Olympic gold medals and missing out on a third World Cup title last year in a penalty shootout.

New Zealand's chasing the twelfth and final berth for the London Games with the final stage of Oceania qualifying a home and away playoff against a yet to be determined nation in March and April.

The Football Ferns will also play Northern Ireland, South Africa and South Korea at next month's Cyprus Cup.
