Statham reaches final round of qualifying

The New Zealand tennis player Rubin Statham is through to the final round of qualifying at the US$50,000 Challenger in Hawaii after defeating Korea's Suk Jeong 6-2 6-4.

He will now take on third seeded American Kevin Kim for a place in the main draw.

Meanwhile, fellow New Zealander Artem Sitak lost a close three set match to Zimbabwe's Takanyi Garanganga 5-7 6-3 6-4, while fellow Kiwi Dan King-Turner was also defeated in three sets by Chris Rungkat (Indonesia) 6-3 3-6 6-0 in the second round of qualifying.

In the doubles qualifying, King-Turner and New Zealand number one Michael Venus beat the pair of Rong Ma (China) Wei-Yu Su (Taipei) 6-4 6-0.

Venus is in the main draw singles with a first up match against former top 100 player Robert Kendrick.
