Campbell backing locals to take out NZ Open

8:13 am on 1 December 2011

The former US Open champion Michael Campbell is predicting a local golfer to break the run of foreign winners at the New Zealand Open starting in Christchurch today.

A New Zealander hasn't lifted the trophy since Mahal Peace in 2003.

While Campbell may not be a favourite to reclaim the title he won back in 2000, there are several New Zealanders including Michael Hendry and Josh Geary, who're strong contenders to bring the Championship home.

Campbell says it's been a long time between drinks for New Zealanders at the tournament, but he's predicting that to change at Clearwater.

The first groups are currently on course having teed off their first rounds at 7am.
