The Chelsea and England football captain John Terry has denied making a racist slur against defender Anton Ferdinand during the 1-0 Premier League defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

The 30-year-old issued a statement after video footage was posted on the Internet saying he's disappointed people have leapt to the wrong conclusions about the context of what he was seen to be saying to Ferdinand, brother of Manchester United's Rio - a former England captain and a strong avocate of ending racism in football.

Terry says he thought Anton Ferdinand was accusing him of using a racist slur against him and he responded aggressively, saying he never used that term, would never say such a thing and is saddened people would think he would.

Terry says there was no problem between him and Ferdinand when the pair spoke after the game which Chelsea lost after being reduced to nine men in the first half.

Last week Manchester United defender Patrice Evra accused Liverpool striker Luis Suarez of racially abusing him in their 1-1 draw at Anfield.

The Uruguayan has denied any wrongdoing and the Football Association is investigating the matter.
