Clipsal 500 returns to V8s calendar

1:16 pm on 8 October 2011

The V8 Supercars competition will stage the most championship events on record in 2012 with more promised in following years.

There are 16 events confirmed for 2012 with a yet to be announced international race in November and V8 Supercars racing alongside Formula One in Abu Dhabi, as they do at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne each year.

Shifting the Abu Dhabi Championship races to November means the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide reclaims its place as the season opener, also shortening the season by roughly a month, while Tasmania, Winton and the Abu Dhabi rounds of the series will all move dates for 2012.

The Clipsal 500 had been scheduled after the season-opening Middle East round for the past two years but has reverted to start the 15-event championship.

The Tasmanian round at Symmons Plains will switch from November to March, while Winton in north-east Victoria will have its event shifted from May to August.

As expected, Sandown will host the Bathurst endurance lead-up for 2012 and Phillip Island will revert to a normal round of the series.

While the Sandown 500 returns to take over the Phillip Island slot in September, Phillip Island will now hold its event in May.

The season will climax with the Sydney 500 at Homebush.

The V8s also have one slot in their calendar remaining in early November after the Abu Dhabi race - which is also likely to be an overseas round.
