The Masterton golfer Ben Campbell is two rounds away from being invited to The Masters after the 20-year-old fired a 66 to move to 11 under par and take a three-shot lead at the midway stage of the Asian Amateur Championships in Singapore.
Campbell, who collected four birdies and an eagle in his 66 at the Singapore Island Country Club's New Course, is three strokes ahead of KCJ De Silva of Malaysia who is yet to finish his second round because of suspension of play.
The New Zealand amateur number two is happy to be leading after two rounds but knows there is a long way to go.
If Campbell wins the event he will be invited to play the year's first major at Augusta National and follow in the footsteps of former New Zealand amateur Danny Lee.
New Zealand number one Ryan Fox is also right in contention.
The Royal Auckland member had a two under par 70 to be five under for the tournament, six shots back from Campbell.
Vaughan McCall, from the Gore Golf Club, dropped three places to a share of 13th after an even par 72.
New Zealand Amateur champion Mathew Perry is one under through 15 holes before play was suspended.
He has climbed to a share of 16th place.
Auckland amateur Sam An climbed eight places after a one over par 73 in round two.
Manawatu golfer Josh Munn will resume play today and is currently at eight over for the tournament.
He needs to birdie the final two holes to make the cut.
All eyes are on the other end of the draw where Campbell has the chance of rewriting history and become the first New Zealand golfer to win the Asian Amateur Championship.
An invitation to the 2012 Masters Tournament awaits the champion this week, with both the winner and the runner(s)-up earning places in International Final Qualifying for The Open Championship.
