Auckland runner Kimberly Smith has won a major American road race, setting a new USA record as well as the New Zealand national mark.
Smith won the Philadelphia half marathon in 67 minutes and 11 seconds, improving her own US Allcomers record by 25 seconds as well as setting the New Zealand half marathon record.
Smith and Ethiopian Worknesh Kidane ran together until about the final mile when Smith took the lead and Kidane couldn't keep up.
It was Smith's first major race since the Boston Marathon, where she had a big lead after 10 miles but succumbed to a torn calf muscle and had to drop out.
