Wairarapa United's fairytale run through football's Chatham Cup had the perfect finish in Palmerston North where the first time finalists defeated Napier City Rovers 2-1.
The Fijian midfielder Pita Rabo scored the winner in the 84th minute for a club that had never progressed beyond the last 16.
Vanuatu international Seule Soromon opened the scoring in the 24th minute but Napier, who were chasing a fifth cup win, levelled in the 67th minute when Fergus Neil pounced on indecision in the Wairarapa ranks and netted from eight yards out.
Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley, who has brought the club up through the divisions in recent seasons, says winning the 89-year-old trophy realises a dream that gained momentum when they beat three-time winners Waitakere City 4-1 in Carterton last month.
