The discarded All Blacks winger Hosea Gear says he's focusing on the impending birth of twins, as he comes to terms with missing out on the World Cup squad.

Gear is regarded as possibly the unluckiest of those to miss out with assistant coach Wayne Smith saying Gear couldn't have done anything more to press his claims.

Gear's partner is expecting twins in the next few weeks and he says he must think about the financial security of his family as he contemplates whether to stay in New Zealand or head overseas.

He's also received some words of encouragement from his brother, Rico, who missed out on the All Blacks 2007 World Cup squad in similar circumstances.

Hosea Gear says his brother, who played 19 tests and is now playing in Japan, told him to remember when one door closes another opens and he's trying to be positive about the future.
