Pierre Quinon, the first Frenchman to win the Olympic pole-vault, has died at the age of 49.
Quinon was known to suffer from depression, and in announcing his death the French Athletics Federation said his family confirmed that he committed suicide.
Quinon's hour of golden glory came at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, a year after he broke the world record.
He retired in 1992 and entered the restaurant business in the south of France.
