Anchored by Auckland swimmer Lauren Boyle, the New Zealand 4x200m freestyle relay team has won a silver medal at the World University Games in China, edging out the host nation by two one hundredths of a second.

New Zealand's now won nine medals, including four gold, at the meet which is one more than the total medals won by New Zealand swimmers in the previous 25 World University Games.

Going into the fourth and final leg of the relay New Zealand was third, trailing China by more than four seconds but Boyle's effort saw her steal second in the final thrust for the wall.

The United States won the race by four seconds.

Earlier 19 year old Matamata swimmer Matt Stanley finished sixth in the final of the 400m freestyle in a personal best time.
