Manawatu have beaten neighbours Wellington for the first time in the capital in 124 years, winning 31-25 to go to the top of the provincial rugby Championship and leave the hosts bottom of the Premiership.

Manawatu's historic win in Wellington came after the Turbos led the home side 16-14 at half-time.

Wellington began well with two tries but Manawatu scored two of their three tries in the second half.

Hawke's Bay also showed their promotion credentials in Rotorua, upsetting Premiership contenders Bay of Plenty 32-13 and spoiling the Steamers' centenary celebrations.

Manawatu's now just a point clear of Hawkes Bay, while Southland retained the Ranfurly Shield with a try in injury time to defeat North Harbour 25-23 at Invercargill.
