Campbell to have surgery

6:17 am on 9 August 2011

The New Zealand number one amateur golfer Ben Campbell will have surgery on a foot this morning which has affected his game in recent weeks and has changed his future plans.

Campbell returned home yesterday after the abnormal bone growth in his foot started to prove too much for him.

The 19-year-old from Masterton says it was painful and was restricting his swing.

Following his operation Campbell will not swing a club for the next four to five weeks as his foot heals. It will give him plenty of time to work on his putting which was one of the weaker parts of his game on the Northern tour.

It has also changed his plans to turn professional at the end of 2011.

He says if he had come back after a good northern season he would have definitely turned pro but it hasn't really happened.

Campbell has plenty to look forward to in the coming months. He hopes to be fit to defend his Carrus Tauranga Open title he won so impressively last May and he qualifies for the pro event Asian Panasonic Open after finishing in the top five in the Asian Amateur Championship in 2011.

Campbell will return to work with his coach Marty Joyce in his adopted hometown of Melbourne as he hopes to play in the summer of pro events that include the Australian Open, Australian Masters, NSW PGA and NSW Open across the ditch and the BMW New Zealand Open.

But before then Campbell will represent New Zealand at the Asian Amateur Championship - where if he can win he would book a place at the Masters - and play in the Four Nations Cup at The Hills.
