The world championship swimming trio of Penelope Marshall, Sophia Batchelor and Daniel Bell showed their class on the opening night of finals at the New Zealand short Course Championships in Wellington.

North Shore swimmer Marshall, a finalist at the world championships in Shanghai last week, proved the class of the field to win the 200 metre freestyle final at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre.

Christchurch's Batchelor took out the 16 years honours in the 50 metre butterfly but was fastest of all swimmers in finals tonight as well as winning her age group in the 200 metre freestyle in the third fastest time overall, and the 100 metre backstroke.

North Shore's Bell, unable to find his best form at Shanghai, bounced back with a strong performance to win the 100 metre backstroke.
