Gisborne teenager Monique Smith earned a silver medal and her first podium at the UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen, bringing the overall New Zealand medal haul so far to six with one gold, two silver and three bronze.
Smith was the only New Zealander to push through to the finals in the Challenge age group classes on the second day and pushed the winner, Felicia Stancil, all the way in the 16-year-old girls' decider, as the American claimed her ninth straight world number one honour.
Smith says she was just happy to make the final, which was a daunting process after drawing the unforgiving outside lane.
