Suarez scores twice as Uruguay beat Peru to reach final

7:10 pm on 20 July 2011

Liverpool football striker Luis Suarez struck twice in three minutes at La Plata to launch Uruguay past Peru 2-nil and reach the Copa America final.

Uruguay remain on course for a record 15th title and will face either Paraguay or Venezuela in the final in Buenos Aires. Those teams play in the other semi-final tomorrow morning.

Uruguay went ahead eight minutes into the second half today when Diego Forlan shot left-footed from outside the box forcing Raul Fernandez into a diving save and the ever alert Suarez nipped in to score from a tight angle on the right.

Suarez scored again three minutes later when Alvaro Pereira passed from the left and the striker collected the ball, rounded Fernandez on the edge of the box and steered it gently home.

Peru captain Juan Vargas was sent off in the 69th minute for elbowing Uruguay defender Sebastian Coates in the face.
