The Parramatta hooker Matt Keating says he doesn't want his family dog put down after it badly bit him ruling him out of the National Rugby League for six weeks.

Keating was wrestling with his pet in the front yard of his house on Monday, when the bulldog bit his index finger.

Keating suffered a compound fracture and has had a plate and wires inserted to hold the bone together.

However he says the dog, which is owned by his parents, hasn't shown such aggression in the past and he doesn't want it put down.
