Ethiopian wins Tokyo marathon

Ethiopia's Hailu Mekonnen has beaten Paul Biwott of Kenya to win the men's race of the Tokyo marathon with Russia's Tatiana Aryasova taking the honours in the women's event.

The 30-year-old Mekonnen, who only began competing in full distance marathons last year, crossed the finish line in two hours, seven minutes and 35 seconds.

Biwott was 43 seconds back in second.

In the women's race, Japan's Yoko Shibui saw the lead she took at the 27km mark disappear with Aryasova overtaking her with 3km to run.

The Russian went on to win the race in 2:27:29.
