Maxi Rodriguez scored in the 86th minute to earn Liverpool a second successive Premier League win, after last weekend's victory against Blackburn, and lift the 18-time champions into mid-table.
Meanwhile Kevin Nolan hit a hat trick to help Newcastle to a 5-1 win over Sunderland.
The victory saw Newcastle move up to seventh place in the Premier League standings with 14 points from 10 games.
In the morning's other game, Aston Villa and Birmingham ground out a goal-less draw at Villa Park in another feisty local derby.
