Auckland Transport (AT) is encouraging those attending the Auckland FC v Melbourne Victory game today to make the most of free public transport and free event buses to Go Media Stadium.
AT chief executive Dean Kimpton said more than 28,000 fans were expected at the match on Saturday evening, which would be the second leg of a home-and-away A-League semifinal - with the winners qualifying for the Grand Final. The Black Knights currently lead the series 1-0.
AT said it was throwing its support behind Auckland FC and had arranged special event buses running from Albany, stopping at all the Northern Busway stations, before heading for the stadium.
Bus and train travel across the city would also be free for anyone with match tickets for the Auckland FC game and the Black Ferns rugby game against United States at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday.
Those with tickets to the matches needed to show their tickets to drivers and were reminded to keep their tickets for the return trip.
Kimpton said AT wanted to support people to get to the games safely and efficiently.
"As a fan of the Black Knights and their outstanding season, it's been fantastic to enjoy the real buzz around the city and beyond they have brought to us," he said. "It's going to be a big weekend for Auckland, so we're asking people to plan their trips ahead of time, so they can travel smoothly.
"Just like after all big events in Auckland and around the world, there may be a bit of a wait, while our team works hard to help get you home onboard our buses and trains."
Meanwhile, some bus routes surrounding Go Media Stadium will be detoured, including routes 66, 67A and 74. There will also be road closures during the Auckland FC match at Beasley Avenue, Maurice Road, O'Rourke Road, Station Road and Olive Road.
