Alinghi Red Bull Racing will not make the start line for the next America's Cup after failing to see eye-to-eye with defenders Team New Zealand.

The former winners of the Auld Mug are winding down their racing team.

In a statement Alinghi Red Bull Racing said "despite all our efforts", they "have not been able to find agreement with the Defender of the America's Cup for the future of the event".

"We would like to have seen more accountability, greater transparency and new opportunities to perform not only individually but as a group. That way we might all of us together could have delivered a commercially viable event capable of attracting global TV coverage, spectators, and sponsors."

Alinghi Red Bull Racing said it was with "great disappointment" they had reached to decision to disband the team.

"The brands that have formed that team will always be part of the America's Cup history and the last few years have been an incredible journey.

"We thank every team member, every sponsor and every supporter for their belief, trust, and commitment throughout."

Earlier this month, Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton told RNZ that five challengers for the 38th America's Cup in 2027 was a good number.

"We had a good number last time because you don't want this thing to run forever. It costs a lot, too much, for the teams to be racing forever so I thought it was about right last time," Dalton said.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Ineos Britannia, Luna Rossa, American Magic and Orient Express Racing were the challengers for the last event in 2024 in Barcelona.

Ineos Britannia will not race in 2027 either after Sir Jim Ratcliffe withdrew his entry. Britain will be represented by Challenger of Record Anthena Racing lead by Sir Ben Ainslie.

Dalton has floated the idea that Australia could return to the America's Cup for the first time since 2000, entries open in June when the venue for the racing should be locked in.
