Italy's French Open tennis champion Francesca Schiavone has been among the first qualifiers for the second round of the US Open.
30 year old Schiavone, the 6th seed in New York, had won only three matches since her Roland Garros triumph, and although she dropped only one game to Japan's Ayumi Morita, the match was littered with mistakes on both sides.
The five time men's champion at Flushing Meadows Roger Federer opens his programme later today against a little known Argentine, Brian Dabul.
