Black Caps coach Gary Stead is delighted with the development shown by the depleted team in Pakistan.

The New Zealanders salvaged a drawn T20 series thanks to Mark Chapman's maiden T20I century helping them to a six wicket win in Rawalpindi yesterday.

His form in Pakistan was rewarded with him being added to the Black Caps ODI squad for the rest of the tour.

There are eight Black Caps regulars playing in the Indian Premier League.

"The series result was fantastic considering the number of players at the IPL, Stead said on his arrival in Pakistan after missing the T20 series.

"We're playing a full strength Pakistan team and a team that made the T20 World Cup final so to have a result like that is fantastic."

Chapman debuted for the New Zealand white ball side in 2018 and since then has played 33 T20 internationals and five ODI's.

"It's not just about one knock for Mark Chapman why he's been added to the ODI squad.

"It's about how we keep building towards the World Cup (in India in October-November) and Mark Chapman is still one guy who is in our thoughts around that."

Stead admits that having less experienced players playing on the world stage, is also a big benefit the coaching staff.

"The obvious one around that is building depth.

"For us it's not always about measuring the wins and losses but how we can keep building the player depth."

Stead says it's just as important that the players coming into the side understand the role they're expected to play.

"The one thing we're trying to avoid here is players going out and playing for themselves... that breeds some characteristics and qualities we're not interested in in this team."

Stead has confirmed that Ben Lister is still troubled by the ankle injury he suffered during the T20 series and is unlikely to be available for selection for the first couple of ODI's.

He also said there had been some sickness within the camp ahead of the first of the five ODI's in Rawalpindi on Thursday night.
