A second boat has retired from the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

The 50-year-old Sanyo Maris has pulled out with equipment failure.

Skippered by Iain Kiernan and one of the oldest boats in the fleet, Sanyo Maris is heading back to Sydney.

The first boat to retire was Georgia, whose crew have now arrived in Batemans Bay on a police vessel after their yacht suffered rudder damage and began sinking.

Maxi's Skandia and Wild Oats are still battling each other at the head of the fleet as they enter Bass Strait.

The 52-foot boat Quest is leading the battle for an overall handicap victory.

the New Zealand boat Time Lord is in 68th position.
