It's that of time of the year - the RNZ Sports crew look back of the sporting highlights, lowlights, and oddities of the sporting year that was.

Here's Barry Guy's thoughts on the 2022 sporting year.

What was your sporting highlight of the year?

2022 wasn't set to be a hugely memorable year until the Black Ferns won the Rugby World Cup.

Right up until the final few seconds of the tournament I struggled to believe the Black Ferns would add another title with England being the dominant team for the last couple of years.

Thank goodness the team had a lot more belief than me.

The squad put behind them the difficulties of the last year and showed plenty of joy in the way they played... well done, we can all learn a lot.

Special mentions

Winter Olympic gold medalists Nico Porteous and Zoi Sadowski-Synott

Commonwealth Games team.... another stunning performance by the New Zealand athletes in Birmingham grabbing 50 medals in total including 20 gold... four of those coming from cyclist Aaron Gate.

Lydia Ko... the signs were good in 2021 and this year the young golfer was back at her best, winning 3 titles, including one in her country of birth South Korea and also the rich season-ending tournament.... she's number one again, so is it time for her to receive a damehood?

Dame Lisa Carrington... the 33 year old keeps on paddling, New Zealand's most successful Olympian won another 2 titles at the Canoe Sprint World Championships and is showing no signs of slowing down.

What was your sporting lowlight of the year?

The country's mood swings with the performance of the All Blacks.

Ireland scoring their first ever win over the All Blacks in New Zealand and then sealing an historic series victory, left much of the country in despair.

The men's game is very competitive now and I don't think the All Blacks will ever dominant the game again.

The current side doesn't come close to the team that won in 2015, so brace yourself New Zealand I think it'll be a shock if they win the World Cup next year.

Shane Warne..... the great spin bowler of all-time passed away in March.... far too young.... hated him when he was playing New Zealand, loved him the rest of the time.

LIV Golf.... I'm not surprised that a split in world golf happened and I'm sure they'll reconcile, but it got very bitter for a while and some sports bodies do have too much control to the detriment of players.

Memorable Sporting moment?

Joanah Ngan-Woo stealing England's lineout ball in the last seconds of the World Cup final.... Ruby Tui starts jumping for joy and then realises the game isn't quite over.... love it.

Disappointments?

Boxer David Nyika suffering an injury before the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

While winning is never a certainty, Nyika was set to become the first boxer to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals after success in 2014 and 2018.

However he suffered a hand injury in a fight in Australia in July and was ruled out of the Games.

Work in progress?

Big steps for New Zealand sports this year trying to achieve some equality, diversity and well-being.

Some of the lessons have been tough and there is still a lot more to do.

What am I looking forward to most in 2023?

The Fifa women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The biggest ever tournament to hit these shores, so jump on board.
