Japan and Spain advance to the knockout stages after Japan's incredible comeback win over Spain to top Group E at the Qatar FIFA World Cup.

Japan have comeback from 1-nil down to defeat Spain and secure top spot in Group E this morning at the Khalifa International Stadium.

No team in Group E was guaranteed a spot in the Round of 16 going into this morning's games, with Germany taking on Costa Rica in the other fixture.

Japan have topped the group with six points, while Spain have advanced in second place on four points thanks to a massive goal difference tally.

Germany were forced to fight hard to beat Costa Rica 4-2 after the Central American took the lead in the second-half to make it 2-1.

However, due to Spain's goal difference Germany have been dumped out of the World Cup. The Germans needed Spain to win against Japan if they were to secure themselves a spot in the next round.
