Rain forced the teams from Seddon Park for the final time just after 8pm, ending four frustrating hours dominated by intermittent showers and uncertainty.

India had reached 89 for one in the 13th over when play was finally abandoned, having been sent in by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 45 and Suryakumar Yadav was 34, the pair having put on 66 off just 7.4 overs in a lively stand after captain Shikhar Dhawan departed for three, off the bowling of Matt Henry (1-20).

The series decider will be played in Christchurch on Wednesday, with India needing victory to square proceedings in the final match of their limited overs tour.

New Zealand will remain the world's top-ranked ODI side, regardless of the result at Hagley Oval.
