Former New Zealand Olympic triathlete Shane Reed has died at age 49 from brain cancer.

Reed represented New Zealand at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, helping team-mate Bevan Docherty to a bronze medal.
He also won two ITU (as World Triathlon was formerly known) World Cup races, picked up several other World Cup podium finishes and took out three World Aquathlon titles.
"It is with profound sadness that Triathlon New Zealand acknowledges the passing of Shane Reed, Olympian #1079," the national body said in a statement.
"Among the tributes flowing in from around the globe, Shane is remembered as "one of the good guys", a quiet and humble achiever at the highest echelons of our sport.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with Shane's family and friends at this time."
Global governing body World Triathlon also acknowledged Reed's death, sharing a video of his successes along with a statement on their website.
"World Triathlon would like to express its deepest sadness for the loss of New Zealand Olympian Shane Reed. This devastating news has shattered the Triathlon and Multisport community.
"Shane, a quiet achiever, has had multiple sporting achievements to his name over the years...
"World Triathlon offers condolences and support to Shane's family, friends and teammates ... [he will be remembered as] an exceptional athlete, friend and role model."
