Choi and Xu had the two-counting scores, shooting even-par and one-over respectively.

New Zealand had a team score of one-over which meant they finished on 13-under. Japan shot five-under as a team to finish on 20-under-par.

Choi led the Kiwis out of the gate and played solidly to finish 18th on the individual leaderboard after rounds of 72, 79, 71, and 72.

Xu finished in a tie for tenth at one-under, with rounds of 70, 69, 75, and 73.

Lu had the non-counting score of 81 today.

New Zealand was looking for its first win since 1999.

The Aucklander mixed five birdies and an eagle on the par-five 12th hole with two bogeys to move with three shots of leader Ricardo Gouveia of Portugal.

Meanwhile a disappointing one-over par second round has seen Steven Alker fall from joint leader into a tie for third at the Senior PGA Championship in Michigan.

The in-form Alker fired a superb opening round of seven-under par 64.

But he struggled to get going on day two, making two bogeys and just one birdie to be two shots behind joint leaders Stephen Ames and Scott McCarron.

Michael Campell was tied for 30th after backing up an even-par opening round with a one-under second round.

The stewards determined he didn't noticeably reduce his speed, despite seeing the yellow flags and the yellow light panel stationed at the marshal post.

As a result, Lawson's best lap time was deleted and his second-best time was used instead.

He would start fifth for the feature race, while he would be 11th on the grid for the sprint race after an additional five-place grid drop.

Venus is rapt with the way he and Puetz have gelled together after the German missed most of the clay court season with an ankle injury suffered at the Monte Carlo Masters.

"You never know quite what's going to happen," he said.

"But it was great being back on court with him and some of the things we've been working on in practice we have done well. We are both clear what we are trying to do individually and as a team."

Venus and Puetz will face either 12th seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcelo Arevalo-Gonzalez or French wildcards Enzo Couacaud and Manuel Guinard for a place in the quarterfinals.
