World Cup qualifying tournament cancelled

The outbreak of the new Covid 19 variant, Omicron, has seen the ICC cancel the womens cricket World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies will now progress to the tournament to be held in New Zealand in March 2022, based on their world rankings.

ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley says they're incredibly disappointed to have to cancel the remainder of this event but with travel restrictions from a number of African countries being imposed at such short notice there was a serious risk that teams would be unable to return home.

A support staff member within the Sri Lankan team had also tested positive for the virus.
