Manawatu fighting to stay in top flight

3:19 pm on 6 August 2008

The New Zealand Rugby board is expected to make a decision on proposed changes to the national provincial competition by the middle of the week.

Smaller unions have found the competition too expensive with a 14-team structure....and the Tasman union looks likely to be one top-flight casualty after last week being bailed out by the NZRU to the tune of six figures.

But Manawatu coach Dave Rennie says they want to stay and their 1-point win over Canterbury in Christchurch on Saturday shows they're good enough to be in the top flight.
