The win means they now sit second on the ladder with three wins, four points behind the competition-leading Crusaders after their shock defeat to the Highlanders last week.

The Hurricanes played 20 minutes of the first half with 14 men, after first flanker Du'Plessis Kirifi then skipper Ardie Savea were yellow-carded.

The boot of Jordie Barrett kept them in touch however, the fullback landing three penalties as the Blues took a 10-9 into half-time thanks to a penalty try.

The Blues opened up in the second spell, TJ Faiane scoring in the 50th minute after a storming midfield break from fullback Stephen Perofeta.

Winger Mark Telea dived over in the corner with 14 minutes remaining to open out a commanding lead, the Blues keeping the visitors scoreless until three minutes from full-time when Reed Prinsep crashed over.

Blues first-five Otere Black added a late penalty to seal the win.
