City, who extended their winning run to 19 games in all competitions, are unbeaten in their last 26 matches and have a huge advantage for the March 16 return leg in Manchester after Silva headed in a pinpoint Joao Cancelo cross in the 29th minute to put them in front.

The first leg was played in the Hungarian capital Budapest due to COVID-19 travel restrictions in Germany.

Meanwhile Ferland Mendy popped up with a late winner to earn lacklustre Real Madrid a 1-0 win over 10-man Atalanta in their game in Italy.

Real's task appeared to have been made much easier after Atalanta's Remo Freuler was sent off in the 17th minute for denying Mendy a goal-scoring opportunity.

Against the 10 men, however, Zinedine Zidane's side, who were missing several high-profile players through injury, struggled to break down the hosts.

The Victory scored from set pieces either side of half time.

Again Ufuk Talay's side struggled in front of goal at both ends.

"If there's an award for a team that can get into the box and not score, we win that," he said.

"If there's an award for allowing cheap goals from set pieces, I think we win that as well."

The Phoenix have just one win front eight games with their next game against Newcastle on Sunday.

India on top in Ahmedabad

Spinner Axar Patel claimed a career-best 6-38 as India bundled out England for 112 on the opening day to put themselves in the box seat in the day-night third test in Ahmedabad.

Rohit Sharma then helped the hosts weather a top-order wobble of their own and finish an eventful 13-wicket day on 99-3.

Rohit was batting on 57 at stumps with Ajinkya Rahane on one at the other end with India eyeing a handy first-innings lead.

Earlier, Joe Root's decision to bat backfired as the tourists folded in 48.4 overs inside two seasons despite Zak Crawley's stroke-filled 53.

Around 40,000 fans thronged the world's largest cricket stadium which was named after India Prime Minister Narendra Modi just before the game.

the result of this game will go a long way to determining who will meet New Zealand in the Test Championship final later this year.

Bennett upset by Cycling NZ ruling

The New Zealand cyclist George Bennett is upset he won't be able to wear a jersey designed by his partner in Europe this year.

Bennett won the national road title earlier this month allowing him to wear the champions jersey while competing for his Dutch Jumbo Visma team.

His partner Caitlin Fielder, who is a designer, made a few tweeks to the black jersey but it was rejected by Cycling New Zealand.

Bennett told The Social Distance Podcast, it was an amazing jersey, but he'd been "shut down" by Cycling New Zealand.

The National body said the design - a black fern on a white shirt - had already been registered with the UCI for 2021 so with the year underway a change to that registration wasn't possible.

France's Six Nations game to go ahead

France's Six Nations rugby match against Scotland in Paris will go ahead this weekend as planned after the hosts reported no further positive Covid-19 tests for a second consecutive day.

There had been doubts cast over the match after five more France players were found to be positive in tests conducted last Sunday, bringing the total to 10.

However, the French Rugby Federation said there were no further cases detected for a second straight day, allowing the Six Nations Testing Oversight Group to confirm the match will go ahead.

France resumed contact training today but the FFR said it will conduct daily Covid-19 tests until Sunday.

The players that tested positive have all been replaced in the 31-man squad.

France lead the standings with two wins from two games, ahead of Wales on points difference, as they seek to lift the Six Nations title for the first time since 2010.

The Prancing Horse returns to endurance racing

Ferrari will return to the top flight of endurance racing with a hypercar entry in 2023, competing for outright Le Mans 24 Hours victory for the first time in 50 years.

Ferrari last entered the top category at Le Mans in 1973 and rivals will include Toyota, Peugeot, Porsche and Audi among major manufacturers.

The Hypercar category replaces the previous LMP1 in endurance racing.

Ferrari has won Le Mans outright nine times but not since 1965, when it fought a famed battle with Ford at the Sarthe circuit in western France. The marque has tasted success more recently in GT racing, winning the 2019 GTE Pro category.

The name of the Ferrari car and the drivers have yet to be announced.

Lennon quits hoops

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has resigned with the Scottish Premiership football side 18 points adrift of Rangers.

Lennon took charge for a second spell in February 2019 when Brendan Rodgers left and led the club to two titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup.

However, Celtic are well behind their Glasgow rivals in their bid to win 10-straight titles and slumped to defeat at struggling Ross County last weekend.

Assistant manager John Kennedy will take interim charge of the team.
