After starting the day on 222-3, the Black Caps were all out for 431 an hour after tea at Bay Oval in Mt Maunganui.

Bowler Kyle Jamieson made New Zealand's first breakthrough late in the day to leave Pakistan 30-1 at stumps after the day's play finished under lights.

On the morning of day two, captain Kane Williamson plundered Pakistan's bowlers to score his 23rd Test century and shared a 133-run partnership with Henry Nicholls.

Both batsmen were out in the first session, Williamson for 129 and Nicholls controversially for 56.

Williamson resumed on 94 and took 13 balls, and nearly half an hour, to score his first runs of the day.

He reached his second century in as many innings, with a cover drive to the boundary off the bowling of Naseem Shah.

Whereas, Nicholls was 42 not out overnight and quickly went on to his 10th Test half-century.

The first ball after drinks Nicholls was given out caught off the bowling of Naseem.

Nicholls was through the shot early and the ball skied to Shan Masood who ran from slip to take the ball.

Nicholls was reluctant to leave the crease, however New Zealand did not review the decision and he was out although replays showed the ball missed the bat and appeared to come off his forearm.

Wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling was the other major contributor for the Black Caps scoring 73, including eight fours.

Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers with 4-107.
