The New Zealander dominated the first of two races at Sunday's Darwin round to take the win, with McLaughlin's DJR Penske teammate and fellow New Zealander Fabian Coulthard coming in third.

McLaughlin started the second race from pole position but finsihed in second place behind Red Bull Racing's Jamie Whincup.

Kiwi Shane Van Gisbergen rounded out the podium in third place in the second race.

The teams return to Darwin for the next round of racing next weekend.

Phoenix lose duo for playoffs

The Wellington Phoenix forward Gary Hooper and defender Tim Payne have both been ruled out of the A-League finals due to injury.

Both players suffered hamstring injuries that have cut their seasons short.

The football club says the duo will now exit the team's isolation bubble in Sydney and return to their respective homes.

Hooper will return to England to reunite with his family while Payne will travel back to New Zealand.

Ko blows it to finish down the leaderboard

The New Zealand golfer Lydia Ko has finished in a tie for 12th after a poor final round at the LPGA tour's Scottish Open in Aberdeen.

Starting the day in a share of fourth, Ko carded a three over par 74 to end on one under for the tournament, four shots behind the victor, American Stacey Lewis, who won in a playoff after four players finished on five under par.

Rain again wipes out most of play in second cricket test

Pakistan claimed the wicket of opener Rory Burns for a duck to leave England at 7 for 1 in their first innings, before rain forced an early close to day four in the second cricket Test in Southampton.

A little over an hour's play was possible at the start of the day before rain forced the players from the field, and with more bad weather predicted for day five, the match is meandering towards a tame draw.

England bowled out the tourists for 236, with top scorer Mohammad Rizwan (72) being the last Pakistani batsman to be dismissed, and then managed only five overs of their reply.

That was enough time for Burns to lose his wicket as he was caught at second slip by Asad Shafiq off the bowling of Shaheen Afridi in the bowler-friendly conditions.

England lead the three-match series 1-0. The final Test will start in Southampton on Friday.

Tigers keep NRL finals hopes alive

The Wests Tigers have clamied a last-gasp 29-28 win over Canterbury in a 10-try thriller in Sydney.

Luke Brooks nailed a 33-metre field goal with two minutes remaining to break the deadlock after the Tigers appeared set to blow a 16-point lead against the competition cellar dwellers.

The heart-stopping victory propelled the Tigers up to ninth spot, but still four points adrift of the top eight as they bid to break the NRL's longest finals drought.

In Sunday's other NRL match the Newcastle Knights' 26-24 win over Manly moved them into sixth.
