Patel ends his career

Jeetan Patel has finished his stellar playing career with a tidy spell and two more wickets to his tally, but not a Wellington Firebirds victory as the Central Stags proved too slick on their way to a 24-run win in the Super Smash T20 competition.

Patel was recognised for a career that has spanned two decades, receiving a guard of honour onto the Basin Reserve in his final match in yellow and black.

Patel finished with 2 for 30 to take his wickets total to 504 across all formats for Wellington.

Central scored 183 for 6, while Wellington finished on 159 for 9.

The Stags now sit atop the table with two wins from two. The Firebirds have a win and a loss as they plot the rest of their season without the legendary off-spinner in the ranks.

India thump Windies

India openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul both smashed hundreds and combined in a stand of 227 to set up a comfortable 107-run win against West Indies in the second one-day international, levelling the three-match series at 1-1.

Rohit hit 159 for his 28th century in ODIs while Rahul brought up his third in the format with a knock of 102 to lay down the platform for India's massive score of 387 for five after West Indies won the toss and chose to field.

The power-packed Caribbean batting unit, who successfully chased down a target of 288 in Chennai on Sunday to win by eight wickets, were bundled out for 280 in the 44th over at Visakhapatnam.

Cuttack will host the decisive ODI on Sunday.

CA confident of MCG wicket

Cricket Australia boss Kevin Roberts has urged Melbourne Cricket Ground staff not to "overreact" to the abandonment of a domestic match due to a dangerous pitch by producing a flat wicket for next week's Boxing Day test against New Zealand.

A Sheffield Shield match at the MCG was halted last week because of a dangerous surface on which several Western Australia batsmen took body blows from deliveries that reared up at them.

The abandonment was embarrassing for groundsman Matt Page and Melbourne Cricket Club, but Roberts backed ground staff to produce a wicket that would challenge both batsman and bowler.

The MCG's drop-in wicket has been under scrutiny since it was given a "poor" rating by the International Cricket Council after a dull draw between Australia and England in the 2017-18 Ashes series.

In last year's annual Boxing Day test, India beat Australia by 137 runs, and the pitch was rated "average". But the wicket was still criticised by media pundits and fans for offering bowlers little assistance on the opening day.

Roberts said the fresh wicket for the second test between Australia and New Zealand would have more grass than the previous two Boxing Day strips.

Australia lead the three-match series against New Zealand 1-0 after winning the pink-ball day-night opener by 296 runs in Perth.

Tyson Fury says he is willing to take up fellow Briton Anthony Joshua's offer of sparring to prepare for his February rematch with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Fury will fight Wilder in Las Vegas after the pair battled to a draw last December, a result that saw Wilder retain his title.

Joshua, who reclaimed the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO titles with his victory over Andy Ruiz Jr this month, made the offer as he said the 31-year-old would be more likely to agree to fight him at a later date.
