Latest - Trent Boult will undergo scans on a rib injury to assess his fitness ahead of the second test against England after the pace bowler missed much of the final day's play in New Zealand's victory over the tourists in the opening match at Bay Oval.

Boult bowled just one over on Monday before leaving the field, though he was not needed with Neil Wagner ripping through England's lower order as the hosts romped to an innings and 65-run victory.

"At this stage not sure," captain Kane Williamson said when asked about Boult's injury. "He has a scan tomorrow and he is sore at the moment.

"Hopefully the scan comes back clear but we'll have to wait and see."

New Zealand have replacements for Boult if he is ruled out.

Matt Henry operated as the substitute fielder on Monday while fast bowler Lockie Ferguson, who was released ahead of the game at Bay Oval, could make his debut at Seddon Park.

Williamson also left the field late on Monday and after missing the Twenty20 series to rest a hip injury there were concerns it could have flared up again, with the batsman feeling his lower back and hip area as he walked off.

"Yeah, another niggle. Just a bit sore down here," he said gesturing towards his hip. "I think it should be okay.

"It's not the same (injury) but in a similar area.

"Hopefully just a bit of a niggle."

Villa on the rise

Aston Villa brushed aside recent poor results to beat Newcastle United 2-0 at home and create some breathing space above the English Premier League drop zone as Conor Hourihane scored and set up another goal with a couple of clever free kicks.

Ireland midfielder Hourihane put Villa ahead in the 32nd minute, tapping a dead ball to Jack Grealish and then unleashing a thumping shot which flummoxed goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Villa soon earned another dangerous set piece and Hourihane again assumed responsibility, firing the ball into the heart of the penalty area where Anwar El Ghazi arrived to knock the ball into the roof of the net from close range in the 36th.

The win snapped a three-game losing league run for Villa and took them up two places to 15th on 14 points from 13 games, four clear of the relegation zone. Newcastle are 14th on 15.

Russian athletics boss calls for overhaul

The head of Russia's Olympic Committee has called for a full overhaul in the leadership of the country's suspended athletics federation after the sport's global governing body halted its reinstatement process.

Russia's athletics federation had been suspended since 2015 over a report commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency which found evidence of mass doping in the sport.

It has since been working towards reinstatement but World Athletics, the sport's global governing body formerly known as the IAAF, last week halted the process and raised the possibility of the Russian federation being expelled altogether after its president and six others were provisionally suspended over breaches of anti-doping rules.

Stanislav Pozdnyakov, head of Russia's Olympic Committee, said in a statement that the entire leadership of the Russian athletics federation should be replaced and its presidium dissolved.

The recommendation came after WADA discovered inconsistencies in laboratory data provided by Moscow this year.

Aguero out with injury

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will be sidelined for a few weeks with a tendon injury that could rule him out of next month's Manchester derby, manager Pep Guardiola said.

A limping Aguero was replaced by Gabriel Jesus in Saturday's 2-1 win over Chelsea and Guardiola said they would need a "miracle" if the Argentine was to be fit for the Premier League match against rivals Manchester United on Dec. 7.

"(Aguero will miss) a few games, I don't know exactly," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Tuesday's Champions League group match against Shakhtar Donetsk.

"The derby is in two weeks. Maybe we will have a miracle, but I don't think so. He has a tendon problem in front.

City are top of Group C with 10 points -- five ahead of Donetsk and Dinamo Zagreb -- with two games to go. Their final game is in Zagreb next month.
