Close for NZ swimmers on opening day of Youth Olympics

7:33 am on 16 August 2010

It proved nearly but not quite for New Zealand swimmers on the opening day of the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

Two New Zealanders made finals with North Shore's Chloe Francis, who won her 200 medley heat, edged back to fifth after qualifying as the third fastest.

Clubmate Matt Stanley was seventh in the final of the 400 freestyle with both swimmers producing personal bests.

North Harbour's Maddie Dillon had the honour of being the first of the New Zealanders in a medal race, finishing a highly creditable eighth in the triathlon.

Meanwhile world junior champion rowers Beatrix Heaphy-Hall and Eve MacFarlane will be forced to go through the repechage after finishing fourth in their heat in the women's pairs.
