8:59 am on 24 July 2010

The New Zealand cyclist Julian Dean has again been pipped for a stage win at the Tour de France, finishing second on the 18th stage behind Mark Cavendish after the Waihi rider couldn't match the Briton in a sprint for the line.

Italy's Alessandro Petacchi finished third and Spain's Alberto Contador retained the overall leader's yellow jersey with just two stages to go, eight seconds ahead of Luxembourg's Andy Schleck.

It's the second time Cavendish has beaten Dean in a sprint finish during the tour as the BBC's Simon Brotherton reports...
