74 year old Sir Bob Charles has found Carnoustie too tough a test on the first day of the British Senior Open.

The 1963 Open champion, making a rare appearance in a major championship, wasn't able to make a birdie in his 9-over par 80.

The leaders on 67 are the American Jay Don Blake, Englishman Carl Mason and the German Bernhard Langer.
