Erin Nayler and her fiance Jordan Carter were covered in glass when a group protesting the Uber ride-sharing service in Barcelona set to the vehicle they were in with bats and their fists on Saturday morning (NZ time).

Carter described the incident to The New Zealand Herald as "three minutes of terror".

He said the car was cornered and attacked, with some protesters trying to open the doors before the driver was able drive away from the incident without anyone being hurt.

Armed police arrived on the scene soon after the attack.

Nayler, who has more than 50 caps for the Football Ferns, plays professionally for the Bordeaux club in France.

She and Carter had just flown into Barcelona for a weekend holiday.
