The New Zealand triathlete Tony Dodds has managed a top ten finish in sweltering conditions at the ITU World Cup in the Netherlands.

Dodds came out of the 1.5 kilometre swim in a good position, and managed to stay near the front of the pack during the 40 kilometre bike and 10 kilometre run sections to finish 8th overall.

Dodd's says he was very pleased with the result, after heading into the race just wanting to gain some rankings points.

Dodd's wasn't even supposed to be competing at the event, and was only subbed in after fellow New Zealander Ben Pattle crashed during a race in France and had to pull out.

New Zealand's James Elvery also raced well to finish 13th and Tom Davison finished 48th, while Dylan McNeice failed to finish the event.

The race was dominated by Europeans, with Russians Ivan Tutukin and Yulian Malyshev in first and second and Portugal's Joao Pereira coming in third.
