Football World Cup warm-up wins for most usual suspects

The Australian footballers scored a last-minute goal to beat New Zealand 2-1 in their World Cup warm-up match in Melbourne.

The 78th-ranked All Whites lead at half time, following a 16th minute goal from striker Chris Killen.

But Australia's Dario Vidosic equalised early in the second half, and then Brett Holman scored the winner for the 20th placed Socceroos four minutes into injury time.

Meanwhile, England beat Mexico 3-1 at Wembley in their last home friendly before next month's World Cup in South Africa.

England rested five of their key players, but dominated much of the first half, with goals to defenders Ledley King and Glen Johnson.

Mexico's Guillermo Franco scored a well-deserved goal just before half time, but England put the win beyond doubt with striker Peter Crouch finding the net shortly after the restart.

Third-ranked Portugal only managed a disappointing nil-all home draw against the 117th placed Cape Verde, playing a slow and predictable style of football.

Argentina had a convincing 5-0 win over Canada in Buenos Aries, despite resting FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi.

Except for Messi, the Argentina coach, Diego Maradona, played the team expected to take the field in their first World Cup game against Nigeria next month.

The World Cup hosts South Africa drew 1-1 with Bulgeria in their friendly in Soweto, to stretch their unbeaten run to nine games.

And Japan had a disappointing 2-0 home loss to close rivals South Korea in a World Cup send-off for both sides.

It's the second time Japan has succumbed to South Korea this year.
