Despite a defiant knock from Sophie Devine the New Zealand women cricketers couldn't recover from a dreadful start to their run chase in the Twenty20 World Cup final in the West Indies.
Devine's unbeaten 38 off 35 balls rescued the White Ferns after they'd slumped to five for 36 at Bridgetown in Barbados and gave them a shot at victory a year after losing the One Day and Twenty20 World Cup finals to England.
Devine hit a four and six off the last two balls of the 19th over, leaving New Zealand needing 14 runs but couldn't reach or clear the boundary again .
The Australians made 106 for eight after Nicola Browne rocked them with a new-ball burst of 2 for 11 runs in four straight overs.
However the White Ferns quickly lost skipper Aimee Watkins then batting star Sara McGlashan was run out for just one after a dreadful mix-up with Suzie Bates.
